Faculty of Engineering and the Built Enviroment (FEBE)
The Department of Space Systems and Engineering (DASE) prepares students for professional roles in astronautics and space engineering industries, academia and the wider public service. The programme covers Aerospace Engineering, Astronautics & Space Technology and is specifically structured to equip students with a strong aerospace and aircraft engineering basis, extended beyond the atmosphere and up into space. Core concepts, tools and design methodologies for space missions (covering both spacecraft and rocket launch vehicles) are analysed, followed by detailed examination of spacecraft subsystems. This is achieved through delivery of a comprehensive programme of teaching at undergraduate level, which enables graduates to proceed to post-graduate studies. In this programme, students have the opportunity of learning and integrating across multi-disciplinary engineering disciplines. Great emphasis is placed on fundamentals of space systems, aerospace structures and propulsion methods. Core subjects include space vehicle designs, spacecraft dynamics, aero-thermodynamics, space mission management, ground operations, satellite communications, navigation, guidance and attitude control and earth and universe observation. Complementary areas focus are composite materials, rocket propulsion, missiles and space mechanics. As has been already mentioned, the School’s standard numerical techniques of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis are taught and used as routine procedures. A Space Industry Project will be undertaken in the final year of the course. The Department exploits synergy that exists in the School relating to share of expertise, resources and a common support base.
